1995-1997 Volvo 850 R
Pros :
- Powerful turbo engine.
- Traditional Volvo safety and reliabilty.
Cons :
- Boxy shape.
- Torque steer.
The Swedish 850 had begun Volvo's transition from being a safe box on wheels to being a fast and safe box on wheels. That's not to say that the car is unattractive, especially when you let its performance do the talking.
The 240 hp R version was initially introduced in 1995 as the T-5R. Then the T5 and R became two separate trims in 1996, with the R retaining the 240 hp turbocharged engine. This particular engine has the distinction of being a 5-cylinder, which is unique since most car motors have an even number of cylinders. The same engine is used throughout the 850 line in 2.3L and 2.4L form, with the R getting a highly-tuned version of the 2.3L turbo. Power is adequate, and peak torque is available at a lowly 2100 rpm. The 850 R also came in wagon form, creating the new category of upscale high-performance wagons. The wagon has distinctive tail-lights which extend from the roof to the top of the rear bumper. All R cars have unique ground effects and spoilers to differentiate from ordinary 850 models. Unfortunately for enthusiast drivers, the American-market 850 R only comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Reliability is unquestionable and expect problems to be scarce, since Volvo buyers take care of their cars and maintain them through the official dealers rather than shady, low-budget garages.
