1993-1997 Cadillac Seville STS
Pros :
- Powerful NorthStar V8.
- Huge interior room.
Cons :
- Very heavy.
- Expensive suspension problems on pre-1995 models.
The Seville STS is Cadillac's flagship sedan, and its sporty orientation is just icing on the cake, since Cadillac's other mid-90s models were more like barges on wheels.
Featuring the renowned NorthStar V8 which was released in the 1993 model year, the Seville STS pumps out 295 hp, much more than the base Seville SLS. Be sure to avoid the 1992 model year, which looks the same, but packs an older 200 hp engine. All STS models have tuned independent sport suspensions and four-wheel disc brakes, making the Seville one of the best handling front-wheel-drive cars at the time, and provided real competition for German imports. Interior room is huge and electric gadgets are plentiful. In 1995, the STS received a 5 hp bump up in power, and minor engine and suspension problems were ironed out by this time, try to get a good deal on a '95 model.
Problems to look for when purchasing pre-1995 models are failure of the Road-Sensing MacPherson strut suspension, which costs hundreds of dollars to repair, and the ABS Pump Relay, which can be fixed relatively cheaply. Post-1995 cars are more or less trouble-free, if you can find one in good condition.
