2013 Toyota FT-86 nears production with new concept
Toyota’s long-anticipated FT-86 is still under wraps for now. Debuted at the 2011 Geneva Motor show is a new concept version called the Toyota FT-86 II, which the automaker says continues the theme first presented by the original FT-86 concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.
The Japanese automaker has worked with Subaru to develop the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. Both Subaru and Toyota will have their own versions.
Toyota says that it will be powered by a “free-revving” uprated 2.5L flat four developed by Subaru, but both automakers have been especially tight-lipped with regards to the sports car project. A 6-speed manual transmission will be standard.
A production ready model will probably be unveiled over the summer before it goes on sale this fall worldwide. Said to be the pet project of Toyota chief Akio Toyoda, the FT-86 will undoubtedly offer a more performance-oriented driving experience than any Toyota since the Supra.
Look for more details to emerge in the coming months.
