2012 BMW 1-Series hatchback revealed
This is the 2012 BMW 1-Series hatchback. The design might look like a photoshopped joke, but this really is how the new generation of the smallest BMW looks. And it doesn’t bode well for future BMW designs.
At launch, the only petrol engines on offer are two versions of the 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder found in the Mini. The BMW 116i will have a 136 hp variant, while the 118i will have a 170 hp one. The standard gearbox will be a 6-speed manual, while an 8-speed automatic is optional on this rear-wheel-drive sub-compact.
Other new features include a better interior, longer wheelbase, automatic stop/start, an optional gearshift indictor on manual versions, brake energy recuperation, low rolling resistance tyres and electric steering.
While this German-built hatchback looks like a simple unfortunate facelift, it really is a complete redesign that will spawn future models such as a 3-door hatchback, a coupe, a convertible and maybe even a sedan.
